NEW YORK REGIONAL WORK
Cardinal Dolan celebrated Christmas Mass with women incarcerated at Taconic Correctional Facility in Bedford Hills, NY and renamed the Chapel there in honor of Sister Antonia Maguire, the first female Catholic Prison Chaplain in New York State.
On September 22, 2019, the Interfaith Prison Partnership, the Town of Bedford (NY), and the Superintendents of Bedford Hills Correctional Facility and Taconic Correctional Facility hosted a ground breaking Adopt-A-Prison Event at the Town House in Bedford Hills, NY. with 18 organizations participating and 100+ in attendance.
Our additional good news: the Bedford Town Board has unanimously passed a Resolution to establish the Prison Relations Advisory Committee (PRAC), with 19 committee members appointed and our IPP Program Coordinator, Sharon Ballen, appointed as the new PRAC Chairperson.
We are very pleased with these developments, which have been two years in the making.
The PRAC Committee includes elected officials, prison volunteer and reentry organizations as well as legal, business and faith representatives.
This development is most encouraging for the development in our local community of a solid Adopt-A-Prison (AAP) project, which can serve as a model in other parts of NY State and the country at large.
Remembering Those In Prison at The Holidays
Annually, we collect Christmas Calendars, from the Hudson Presbytery and mail them to people in prison. We collect cards, and Bibles from churches of the Presbytery of Hudson River and send to NYS DOCCS Chaplains to distribute.
As part of our Mission, we share the experience of Prison Ministry with domestic and international faith and secular organizations. We would love to come to have this discussion with you!
Recently, Hans spoke at Katonah Presbyterian Church and All Soul’s Parish, The Presbyterian Church Port Chester, NY on Racism and Economics' drastic effect on whom goes to prison, the need for reform, and the issues of forgiveness, restorative justice, and rehabilitation.
IPP arranges Prison Tours every year at Taconic, Bedford Hills and Sing Sing Correctional Facilities in an effort to develop the concept of “Adopt your Local Prison”.
